Hampton Creek is a food technology company that wants the food production system to start over and come up with healthier and more sustainable ways to feed people. They are using science and technology to reinvent common processed food products like mayonnaise and cookies and baking mixes. Their products are all egg-free, and they include Just Mayo, Just Cookies, Just Cookie Dough, and two new salad dressings, Just Ranch and Just Italian. The following are some interesting facts about Hampton Creek products.
- Their first product was called Beyond Eggs, an egg substitute made from the Canadian yellow pea. This egg substitute is the emulsifying ingredient in Just Mayo, an egg-free mayonnaise.
- Just Mayo was first introduced in Whole Foods in 2013, but it is now available in Walmart, Costco, Target, Safeway, Kroger, the Dollar Store, and in many schools and stadiums through Compass Group food service. Just Mayo is the Hampton Creek’s most widely available product, and it comes in four flavors: original, sriracha, garlic, and chipotle.
- Hampton Creek was sued by Unilever, the parent company of Hellman’s, for falsely claiming that their egg-free dressing was mayonnaise. During this controversy, CEO Josh Tetrik explained that the word “just” in the product name means “guided by reason and justice” rather than “only.” The lawsuit was dropped and Just Mayo kept its name.
- Just Cookie Dough is made with sorghum, one of the most inexpensively grown grains. The sorghum replaces egg as the binding agent in the recipe, and it also acts as a sweetener, replacing some of the sugar of a conventional recipe. Since Just Cookie dough is egg-free, it is safe to eat straight out of the container. It comes in two flavors, chocolate chip and peanut butter.
- Just Cookies, also made with sorghum, are available exclusively through Compass Group at the moment. There are six flavors Just Cookies: chocolate chip, peanut butter, oatmeal raisin, whole wheat, and sugar.
- All Hampton Creek foods minimize food allergens and wash their equipment thoroughly to eliminate any risk from cross contamination. The products contain no dairy products or eggs, but some products may contain other allergens, like the peanut butter cookies.
